# Credits and billing

> How Stophy credits work: 1,000 credits cost $2, new accounts get 500 free, failed calls cost nothing, and every response shows what it cost.

Stophy uses credits. You buy credits ahead of time and each successful call uses some.

## Price

* 1,000 credits cost \$2.
* New accounts start with 500 free credits.
* Top up at [stophy.dev](https://stophy.dev). The smallest top-up is \$5.

## What a call costs

Each endpoint has a cost in credits. Find it in the [API reference](/api-reference/introduction), on each source page, or in `GET https://api.stophy.dev/v1/endpoints` (`credits` and `perItems`).

* Most endpoints cost a fixed number of credits per call.
* Some charge per group of results. When `perItems` is set, a call costs `credits` for every `perItems` items it returns, and at least `credits`. For example, web search costs 1 credit per 10 results, so 25 results cost 3 credits.
* Failed calls cost nothing.

## See what a call cost

Every successful response tells you:

* `creditsUsed` in the JSON body
* the `x-credits-used` header, also on markdown responses

For your balance and history, use [`GET /v1/usage`](/api-reference/usage) and [`GET /v1/logs`](/api-reference/logs).

## Running out

When your balance is too low for a call, it answers `402` with code `insufficientCredits` and nothing is charged. Top up and try again.
